Elephants
Elephants are definitely a favorite in every zoo. I mean, who doesn’t adore these gentle giants with their big ears and strong trunks? I remember, when I was kid, I used to stay in front of the elephant’s cage for quite some time, curiously watching every move that it tries to make. It’s really fascinating whenever it moves its very powerful nose to grab on to his food. Or maybe he’s just raising it to let everybody know that he’s enjoying the attention.

Lions and Tigers
A zoo trip will never be complete without seeing the lions and the tigers. Of course, they’re the all powerful big cats in the animal kingdom. Seeing them at play or just walking in their cage is already amazing. But if you’re lucky enough to hear their growls, you will be glad that there’s a fence that separates you from them.

Giraffes
Giraffes are not so common so make sure that you get to personally see one, without the hassles of going to the savannahs in Africa. Finding a giraffe in a zoo is easy– people will be most likely looking up. That should come as to no surprise since giraffes are the world’s tallest mammals, and they can grow as tall as 19 feet! They may look down on you once in a while, but don’t worry, they are sociable creatures.

Hippos
Another animal that’s been gaining popularity in zoos is the hippopotamus or river horse. Hippos are amphibians– during daytime, they submerge their bodies in water and by sunset, they leave the water and walk as far as five miles. Although they may look harmless, hippos are considered one of the most feared and dangerous animals in Africa. Although predators can kill baby hippos, adults are rarely attacked. But don’t worry, they don’t eat humans, they’re vegetarians and eat mainly grasses and water plants.

Monkeys
Monkeys are surely popular and one of the animals that people love to see when they visit the zoo. That shouldn’t come as a surprise because monkeys are like humans in so many ways– they communicate with hand gestures, facial expressions and also through noises called vocalizations. These primates are playful in nature and can be funny, too.

- Visit the zoo’s website beforehand and try to learn the shows and presentations they offer. Also, try to know the particular times that they are shown. Be sure to find out the feeding schedule of animals so that you’d be able to see them in action.

- Instead of moving from one cage to another, linger in a particular cage for quite some time especially if you want to know more about the animals.

- For your safety, stay only in the designated areas and avoid crossing over the fences or going to restricted places.

Like a fingerprint.
The most fascinating thing about tigers is perhaps the fact that each tiger has its own unique pattern of stripes. Just like human finger print, this is what keeps each tiger distinct from another. These cool stripes are also used to help them hide better in the environment and thus sneak up on their prey easily.

They need protection.
No matter how powerful and scary they may look, tigers just like any other animals also need protection. In fact, there are only nine subspecies of tigers in the world– the three known to be extinct (Javan, Caspian  and Bali) while the remaining six are already endangered (Bengal, Indochinese, Malayan, Sumatran and Siberian).

Not social creatures.
It’s not a mood swing when you see a tiger roaming alone or just lying quietly in one corner. Truth is, tigers are loners most of the time except of course when they are courting, mating or raising their offspring.

Lions meet the Tigers.
Particularly in China, it is quite common to mix the breed of tigers to another feline family, the lions. Tigon is what you call the cross breed of a female lion to a male tiger. If an offspring from the mix is a male, he’s like to be sterile while females can still be able to breed successfully.

White Tigers are not Natural.
Whenever you would see a white tiger, most like this is a result of a genetic mutation. This practice is done quite commonly in zoos to add color to the zoos. However, white tigers are more like to develop serious health problems and other physical deformities than other naturally bred types of tigers.

They are athletic.
No wonder tigers love to bask in a pond or river during the day. They are actually good at swimming and can still capture a prey through the waters. They are also very good jumpers. In fact, they can leap forward as much as 33 feet in one jump.

The tigers just like any other creature also needs to be taken cared of. That’s why it is important for us to know more about them to make us realize that they are special animals worthy of any human admiration. Though it may be more fiction than fact (most species of bears are known for their aggressiveness), I always seem to view these animals as gentle giants, that they can always make any zoo a lively place to visit. So much, that I’ve been a bear advocate for quite some time now, even looking up on some fictional bears. So, to further spice up a zoo’s ambiance, here are some bears that I’d think would brighten up any zoo visit:

Smokey Bear

As the Unites States Forest Service mascot, Smokey Bear – or just Smokey – is a definite image of a gentle bear. With his propaganda-like image on preventing forest fires, he not not only entertains, but teaches lessons as well. Smokey’s forest ranger hat is only an iconic image, reminding everyone that animals can also be caretakers of nature.

(Po) Kung Fu Panda

It’s kung fu fighting with Po! Kung Fu Panda is such a delight to watch, mainly because it breaks the stigma of stereotypical roles. Just because you’re large or overweight doesn’t mean you can’t live your dreams. And with Po being a Panda – which is actually one of the most gentlest bears in the world – he creates a large recall value for kids and adults alike. Also, it’s his great fighting moves that makes him such a hit. How great would it be to see a Panda bear fly high in the sky to kick a block of wood!

Winnie the Pooh

He may not be big, but Winnie the Pooh has got to be the most philosophical bear the world has ever encountered. It’s as simple as it gets – with most of his beliefs stemming from a child’s point of view – but that has got to be the biggest thing that Pooh gives. Imagine this: if ever he’s in a zoo, we can all learn to appreciate the most simplest things in life, which in turn can transform the world into a better place to live in.

Bears are great creatures that can spice up a zoo’s ambiance. Though the bears listed in this article are fictional, they can live on in the actual bears housed in zoos. The next time you visit a zoo, make sure to wave hello to the bears!

Lions

Hey, they’re the king of the jungle, might as well have them in my zoo! For me, the lion’s appeal to me goes to its mane. Aside from being a male lion’s most distinguishable physical feature, the mane exudes a form of grace and pride. It’s like a king’s crown – and I’d like royalty for my zoo!

Wolves

If lions are to live in the safari area of my zoo, I’d like Arctic Wolves in my polar area. There’s something about wolf packs that seem to be so appealing to me. Perhaps it’s the way they hunt, and their feeding hierarchy (alpha wolves eat first) that make them such a treat to watch. Also, having to see how they survive in the harshest colds always amazes me – it’s survival of the fittest, matched together with teamwork of a pack.

Hyenas

You may be thinking, of all animals, why hyenas? It’s the laugh – specifically, their vocal habits – that makes me want them in my zoo. I actually always want a domesticated hyena – if ever there’s one – for me to hang out with. Just imagine, just lounging around, probably smoking a fine cigar and drinking an ice-cold drink with me and my hyena pet – it’s a sight meant for buddy movies, with my loyal hyena snickering and grunting all day long!

It’s the stuff of daydreams, but how I wish it can actually happen. Lions are a symbol of dominance, making them the king of wildlife. Wolves signify teamwork, that things get done when everyone’s doing their part. Hyenas, the joker of the group, brings in the laugh. But more importantly, having a personal zoo – if ever it does happen – will not only fulfill my dreams, but allows me to keep them safe from harm. Try to come up with animals for your personal zoo as well!

Rusty Cage

Just the song title itself is an apt description for most of the animals’ cages I’ve seen on my zoo visit. Yet what makes this ditty a suitable tune to rock on to, is its lyrics. With Soundgarden’s front-man, Chris Cornell, screaming of breaking down a rusty cage, I might as well do the same – if I do find myself in one!

Blow Up the Outside World

Perhaps the bleak feeling of being stared down by a strange group of people, scrutinizing your every move, is a downward spiral that hurts more than being caged in. This song, with its sombre mood and surprisingly heavy guitar riffs, is a song meant for those days when everything seems to be oh-so-wrong. The entire lyrics of the song exudes the pain of being in a helpless situation, yet a single line took hold on me – “Wishing though I never could”, since a zoo animal can never wish freedom, with the controlled environment they’re currently trapped in.

Black Hole Sun

Soundgarden’s most famous hit, is also my personal zoo grunge play-list top-notcher. With nothing to do all day in a cage, but to stare and ponder on the sun, I would have wanted for that big ball of fire in the sky to turn into a black hole. This song’s music video can also apply in the zoo – with humans shown in gruesome, outlandish figures (plastic-textured skin), I probably would view my spectators in the same way as well.

So there goes my recent zoo trip. Although I know that there are always better zoos out there, it was just a shame that I had to be in one under par. Yet, I may do the same exercise as well, the next time I visit another zoo. Try to make your personal zoo grunge play-list as well – it’s a fun activity while checking out your favorite animals!
